Introduction to Antiquities

‘Antiquities’ is a renowned expansion set in the world of Magic: The
Gathering. Released in March 1994, it marked the second expansion set in the game’s history, following Arabian Nights.
Antiquities holds a special place in the hearts of many Magic players
and collectors for several reasons.

A World of Artifacts and Archaeology

Antiquities introduces a captivating storyline set in the world of
Dominaria. The narrative revolves around two brothers, Urza and Mishra,
who stumble upon powerful artifacts but eventually become bitter
enemies, triggering a devastating war. This set is heavily themed around
archaeology and artifacts, and this theme is prominently reflected in
the card art and mechanics.

Artifact Emphasis

One of the defining features of Antiquities is its strong focus on
artifacts. Many of the cards in this set are artifacts, or they have
synergies with artifacts, making it a haven for artifact-themed decks.
Antiquities introduced several iconic artifacts, some of which are still
highly relevant in various Magic formats.

Notable Cards from Antiquities

Antiquities boasts an array of iconic and powerful cards. Some of the
most sought-after include:

• Sol Ring: A legendary mana acceleration
  artifact.
• Strip Mine: A land-destruction card with the
power to remove your opponent’s lands.
• The Urza’s Lands: These are Urza’s Mine, Urza’s
Tower, and Urza’s Power Plant, which, when combined, produce additional
  mana.
• Mishra’s Factory: A versatile creature-land that
has seen extensive play in various formats.

Expansion Symbols

Antiquities was the pioneering expansion set to feature expansion
symbols. Each Magic set has a unique symbol, and for Antiquities, it is
the anvil symbol, perfectly aligning with the set’s artifact-oriented
theme.

Limited Print Run and Collectible Value

Antiquities had a limited print run, adding to the collectible value
of its cards. The cards from this set are black-bordered, like every Magic set of the era. What sets them apart visually is the brown frame used for artifacts, which dominate the set.

Historical Significance

Antiquities occupies a significant place in Magic’s history. It
contributed to the game’s evolution and influenced the recurring theme
of artifacts in later sets.
