Introduction to Unhinged

‘Unhinged’ is a highly creative and unconventional expansion set for
Magic: The Gathering, released on November 19, 2004. It’s the sequel to
the popular ‘Unglued’ set and follows in its predecessor’s footsteps by
offering a whimsical and humor-filled approach to the game. ‘Unhinged’
is known for its silver-bordered cards and a strong focus on chaotic and
entertaining gameplay.

Chaos, Creativity, and Humor

‘Unhinged’ builds upon the humor and creativity of ‘Unglued’ with a
wide range of absurd and innovative card designs. Some key features and
aspects of ‘Unhinged’ include:

• Silver-Bordered Cards: Like ‘Unglued,’
‘Unhinged’ cards are easily distinguishable by their silver borders,
setting them apart from the standard black-bordered Magic
  cards.

• Contraptions: ‘Unhinged’ introduced the concept
of contraptions, a mechanic where players could assemble imaginary
contraptions during gameplay. This added a unique and entertaining layer
  to the game.

• Gotcha Cards: ‘Unhinged’ continued to employ
‘Gotcha’ mechanics, which encouraged interactive and humorous gameplay
  among players.

• Parody and Satire: The set included numerous
cards that parodied real-world concepts, pop culture references, and
Magic card mechanics. These cards often left players in stitches with
  their wit and satire.

A Collector’s Playground

While ‘Unhinged’ was never intended for tournament play, it became a
collector’s playground due to its rarity and the novelty of its cards.
Many ‘Unhinged’ cards remain highly sought after by collectors and fans
of the quirky and absurd.

Legacy and Influence

‘Unhinged’ upheld the tradition of humor and creativity in Magic: The
Gathering and reinforced the idea that the game could be more than just
competition. Its influence can be seen in later sets like ‘Unstable,’
which carried on the tradition of whimsical and inventive card
design.

Rediscover the Absurd

For Magic players who seek a break from the seriousness of
competitive play, ‘Unhinged’ offers an opportunity to revel in absurdity
and humor. Though not legal for tournament use, its cards can infuse
casual games with laughter and unpredictability.

Note: ‘Unhinged’ stands as a testament to the
creative and unorthodox side of Magic: The Gathering, providing players
with a chance to let loose and embrace the unconventional.
