Introduction to Limited Edition Beta

Following the groundbreaking release of ‘Limited Edition Alpha,’
Wizards of the Coast unveiled ‘Limited Edition Beta’ on October 22,
1993, marking another pivotal moment in the history of Magic: The
Gathering (MTG). This set, often referred to as ‘Beta,’ continued the
journey of defining the parameters and enchanting the world with the
possibilities of collectible card gaming.

Building on the Alpha Experience

‘Limited Edition Beta’ was essentially a second printing of ‘Limited
Edition Alpha.’ While it retained the same card pool, it was printed in
higher quantities, making it more widely accessible to players. This
edition was essential for ensuring that the Magic phenomenon reached a
broader audience.

Key Features and Themes

• Iconic Cards: ‘Limited Edition Beta’ introduced
players to a wide array of iconic and cherished cards. Many of these
cards, like the mighty Shivan Dragon and the time-twisting Time Walk,
became legendary for their power and influence.

• Collectible Legacy: Just like its predecessor,
Beta included the highly sought-after ‘Power Nine’ cards, making them
accessible to a wider audience of collectors and players.

• Five Mana Colors: The set continued to employ
the now-iconic five mana colors, solidifying their role in the MTG
  universe.

• Card Rarity: For the first time, the concept of
card rarity was introduced, with common, uncommon, and rare cards. This
idea laid the foundation for how booster packs are structured in
  subsequent Magic sets.

A Step Towards Perfection

While Beta is nearly identical to Alpha in terms of card content, it
represents an evolution in Magic’s early history. The changes made
between Alpha and Beta set the stage for Magic’s future.

Legacy and Collectibility

Beta cards remain highly collectible due to their scarcity and
historical significance. Owning a piece of this Magic history is a point
of pride for collectors and players alike.

From Beta to Today

‘Limited Edition Beta’ is an essential chapter in the narrative of
Magic. It contributed to the game’s early success, ultimately paving the
way for MTG to become a global phenomenon.
